Harmony
Foundation is a leader in promoting practical cooperation
with business in achieving development which is socially
and environmentally sustainable. One core part of that effort
is Green Works which focuses on improving environmental
practices in the workplace.
In order to better understand the real-life challenges
of incorporating the principles of sustainability into workplace
operations, and to assist leaders in their field to set
a standard for others to follow and exceed Harmony Foundation
has worked with lead organizations, including the Royal
Bank and the Westin Hotels and Resorts to assess their practices
and develop new, more environmentally sound ways to do business.
Our Westin Hotel project (1988) launched an industry-wide
effort which continues to benefit the environment.
Workplace Guide: Practical Action for the Environment
was the culmination of two years of field research,
writing and testing to develop a practical and comprehensive
tool for workplaces to assess current practices and develop
a plan of action. It feature over 500 actions, 24 pages
of worksheets, an action planner, 39 success stories, and
information and sources for every aspect of organizational
management (energy, hazardous materials, waste, water, transportation,
purchasing, property management, education and training
and community involvement).
The response to the Guide was overwhelmingly positive.
This practical and comprehensive document continues to be
used by organizations across Canada, including small businesses,
large corporations, institutions, municipalities and environmental
consultants. In total, we have distributed over 45,000 copies!
It was a major reason for awarding us the United Nations
Environment Programme's Global 500 Award in 1992.
